The Rise of John Michael Schmitz

From Humble Beginnings to NFL Stardom

John Michael Schmitz is an American football center for the Minnesota Vikings of the National Football League (NFL). Born on April 29, 2000, in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, Schmitz played college football at the University of Minnesota, where he was a two-time All-American and three-time All-Big Ten selection.

College Career

Schmitz was a highly touted recruit out of Cretin-Derham Hall High School. He committed to the University of Minnesota over offers from several other schools, including Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Michigan.

As a true freshman, Schmitz started 12 games at center for the Golden Gophers. He became a full-time starter in 2020 and earned All-American honors from the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

Schmitz was also a standout performer in the classroom. He was named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team three times and earned his degree in kinesiology.

NFL Career

Schmitz declared for the 2022 NFL Draft following his junior season. He was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the second round (42nd overall).

Schmitz quickly became a starter for the Vikings, starting all 17 games in his rookie season. He was named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team and was ranked as the 10th-best center in the NFL by Pro Football Focus.

Schmitz is known for his strength, athleticism, and intelligence. He is considered to be one of the best young centers in the NFL and has a bright future ahead of him.
